Background

China’s oil market is on the threshold of a new era characterized by the integration of the refining and chemical sectors, greater competition and more challenges.

Two large refining-chemical projects came on line in 2019 and more are on the way, while existing refiners are planning to boost refining-chemical integration to position themselves better in increasingly tense competition. Despite the removal of small and outdated refiners, the country’s refining capacity will keep growing, and China will depend more on crude from the Middle East, Africa and Russia to ensure its energy safety amid a protracted trade war between the US and China.

In the meantime, as rising production and gradual market liberalization continues to intensify domestic competition, Chinese refiners will have to export more refined oil.

The country is also faced with an inevitable switch from heavy dependence on import for bonded bunker fuel to the production of low-sulfur fuel, because of the IMO’s 2020 sulfur cap.

The market is starting to see drastic changes and it has to evolve a new way of development to rise to the challenges of the new era. Meanwhile, what opportunities will this era of changes and reforms bring?

Speakers and Panellists

Amanda Zhao is the General Manager for JLC Global Sales and Marketing. She has over 7 years of experience in offering value added services and strategic insight in JLC’s oil and refining division. Amanda serves as JLC’s key representative in discussions with C-Suite executives and has been invited to speak in various domestic and international forums and conference such the Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC). She also regularly briefs energy professionals from leading ﬁnancial institutions and Fortune 500 companies in our forums on how the major political, and economic forces might play out in the future of China’s energy industry. In additional, she oversees the English editorial team and contributes regularly to JLC reports, research and consultancy projects. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting from Brunel University, London.
Capt. Ranjith is the Lead Analyst with Refinitiv Oil & Shipping Research, where he covers the MENA market, with a primary focus on Oil flows and shipping data. He and his team formulate research and market insights by generating trade flow analytics which enables real time trading information and operational intelligence. The team specializes in vessel tracking and generates big data for the mid-stream and down-stream oil markets including the marine sector by utilizing algorithmic and predictive modelling. Prior to Refinitiv, he was sailing as a Master Mariner and holds an MBA from the Ivey school of Business in Ontario, Canada.
Maggie Han is the Chief Analyst for JLC's oil division. She has more than 10 years of commercial and management experience building on a strong understanding of the crude oil, oil products and oil blending markets. Her responsibilities include leading a strong team of oil analysts, supporting and contributing to market reports, research and analysis for the oil markets as well as providing specific data and insights for short and long term for capacity, supply/demand, price forecasting and trade balances. She can pinpoint market trends and interpret the market from multiple perspectives and has led many tailored research and consulting projects for energy clients from the leading financial institutions and Fortune 500 companies. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in International Trade from Xi`an Jiaotong University.
Wu Guodong has been working in the LPG sector since 2010 and now is the chief analyst of JLC’s LPG division. He has prepared many LPG reports, covering China LPG market, China imported LPG market, China deep-processing industry, price adjustment monitoring, etc. Wu has ever involved in multiple LPG projects of Sinopec, PetroChina and CNOOC. In addition, he has experience in various data maintenance such as China LPG inventory, LPG output and China pressure vessels shipping schedule. Wu also has expertise in data research, research report, customer research, price research, etc. Wu often exchanges ideas with market insiders and has given lots of interviews on various media platforms--newspapers like CNR Business & Finance, 21th Century Business Herald, Shanghai Security News and Changjiang Times, radio stations and TV. His insights have been quoted or reproduced many times in different reports.
Crystal Yeo is the Sales Director for JLC Global Sales and Marketing. She has over 20 years of professional experience, which spans from consulting, marketing, business development, sales leadership and management. Prior to JLC, Crystal heads the Singapore ofﬁce of the Oxford Princeton Programme where she has been building and leading education excellence in energy for over 10 years. In her role, she is responsible for strategically steering all the sales and marketing activities to ensure successful and consistent growth in Asia. Back in the late 1990s, Crystal started her career as a Senior Sales and Marketing Consultant for SunGard Energy where she supports the achievement of business targets for proﬁtability and customer satisfaction by providing enterprise data management, decision support, and quality-checked managed data services to energy traders, research analysts and risk managers from leading ﬁnancial institutions and Fortune 500 companies. Crystal possesses a BA Honors in Marketing from Coventry University, UK.
